Two Writing Classes with Ruth Leibowitz

Ruth gave a talk on Writing Prompts https://www.portlandwritersmill.org/17/the-world-abounds-in-prompts-using-prompts-to-stimulate-and-deepen-your-writing-by-ruth-leibowitz/ back in 2023. She is a very active member of the Writers’ Mill, and also of the writing community at large. This February she will be leading two writing classes over zoom. Highly recommended:

Cats Who Write, with Ruth Leibowitz

A Light-hearted Tribute to the Crafty, Creative Cats in our Midst.

Sunday, February 16, 10:30 AM-1:00 PM PST on Zoom

Many of us who have been chosen by cats are aware that when we are not around, they write things. They write poems, novels, essays, and journal articles  — perhaps even philosophical treatises and research papers. Just because they don’t usually share their finished products with us, we cannot assume their work is not real.  In this group, we will put pen to paper (or fingertips to keyboard)to explore the worlds, viewpoints, and attitudes of domestic felines who, like us, enjoy writing.

A variety of prompts will be offered to elicit your creative fervor, including several short pieces authored by cats. Will we have as much fun with our writing as cats do?

Whether you are just starting or are an established writer, you are welcome to join us for real-time writing in community. This event is part of Write Around the World, a yearly fundraiser for Amherst Writers and Artists (AWA)*.

Impermanence, with Ruth Leibowitz

An exploration of the nature of things

Friday, February 21, 11:00 AM-1:30 PM PST on Zoom

Once we experience something, it is gone, except perhaps in memory. Then the memory and the person holding it are also gone. Personal impermanence can lead to grief, as when we lose perfect health, an illusion, or a beloved person or pet.

Impermanence can also be liberating! Constricting concepts of who we are and what we can do in the world can give way to more spacious and optimistic vistas.

Changes that occur as one season ends and another begins can be inspiring and metaphorical. The brevity of a flower’s existence increases the poignancy of its beauty.

In this meeting of mind, spirit, and writing, we will taste impermanence together. We will write together, and then this particular meeting will be over. We will create word combinations that will never come together in those particular ways again. We will join with billions of others who have come before us, are living now, and will be here when we are gone to ponder and express the experience of impermanence. Writings of both sages and everyday people will be offered as prompts for our exploration.
